 enterprise architecture is an emergent approach to gather complex knowledge on organizations and technologies in one single framework. There are many scientific definitions of it:

- “enterprise architecture is a strategic informative asset which defines the Company mission, the information necessary to fulfil it, the needed technologies and the transition processes towards any new technology required for any change in the Company mission” (USA Federal CIO Council)
- “Enterprise Architecture is the process which turns the business vision and the strategy into actual Company changes and makes possible such an evolution by communicating and realizing those key principles and the models which concern the Company future estate”. (Gartner)
Therefore, Enterprise Architecture is an approach in which three fundamental viewpoints are merging: business processes, information and technology.
The aforesaid definitions are comparing two different perspectives: the first is about the “as is” architecture, the second is more evolutionary and refers to the “to be” architecture, hence affected by the business strategies.
